sorensen blog?

okay, so i was wondering if we are getting really using myfamily enough to warrant m+d paying for it still. as far as i can tell, people just aren't logging in that frequently. so i was thinking that maybe we should just set up a family blog.

thoughts?

i started playing around with it a couple weeks ago. check it out at HCandMA.blogspot.com. right now, it is open to the public, but we can set up usernames and passwords.

some of my thoughts / comparisons:

  • blogspot is free. myfamily charges an annual fee (i don't know how much).
  • blogspot is much more customizable than myfamily, so we could make it look however we want. we can also add / delete whatever functions we want.
  • blogspot won't highlight the "new" items like myfamily does; however, blogspot does allow you to set up an RSS feed (using something like google reader) so you can be notified whenever something new is posted. i think myfamily has a function where it will email you about new postings, but i turned that off because i get too many emails. i'd rather just read it in google reader.
  • blogspot doesn't have a calendar function built in, but we could set something up in google calendar if people want. but ... i think i am the only one who posts things on the calendar anyway.
  • blogspot quizzes / polls are different than myfamily. i actually haven't used the quizzes function on blogspot before, so i'm not sure how it works and especially what it does with old quizzes (does it delete them?).
  • switching to blogspot would mean that everyone would have to learn how to use it.
  • blogspot doesn't have separate functions for news, pictures, and polls ... so i think it's easier to post a story with a picture and then all the comments on that subject can be in one place.
